Chiang Mai has one of the best hospital benches in Southeast Asia for a city its size — a university medical school, half a dozen serious private hospitals, and specialty houses for eyes, nerves, and minds. What it doesn't have is a decent map written for the person who just moved here, or who woke up at 2 a.m. deciding whether tonight is an ER night.

The two-sentence version
If it's frightening — chest, breath, head, blood — call 1669 (free, nationwide ambulance) or go straight to the nearest private ER and let them sort the rest out. A note on reading it: private here (Bangkok, Ram, Lanna, Rajavej, Theppanya, Central Memorial, McCormick) means English at the desk, short queues, card machines, and bills that are real but published. Public (Maharaj "Suan Dok", Nakornping) means the deepest specialists in the North at Thai prices, with Thai-first queues that reward patience and a translator — we know several.
What a visit costs
Indicative, August 2026, confirmed in writing at intake — the standing policy on every number we publish. A private outpatient visit — doctor, meds, the air-conditioned hour — usually lands between ฿800 and ฿2,500. A private ER visit with imaging commonly runs ฿3,000–15,000. Public hospital outpatient care is a few hundred baht and a longer morning. Admission deposits at private hospitals typically start around ฿20,000–50,000; travel insurance with direct billing makes that line item disappear at the bigger houses.

- Complex, rare, or oncology — Maharaj Nakorn (Suan Dok) carries the university's specialist bench; Sriphat is the same faculty in a private-wing setting with appointments.

Do Chiang Mai hospitals speak English?
At the private hospitals, yes — desks, most physicians, and the billing office. At public hospitals expect Thai first; bring a Thai speaker or hire one of ours for anything with consent forms in it.
Can I just walk in without a referral?
Yes. Thailand runs on walk-ins; even specialist clinics at private hospitals take same-day patients most mornings. Referrals matter mainly inside the public system.
Will my travel insurance work?
The big privates (Bangkok, Ram) direct-bill the major insurers; smaller houses may want payment and give you the paperwork to claim back. Either way the itemized bill you leave with is real — that's part of how you're protected here.
