Recovering in Chiang Mai — the gap between discharge and well

Hospitals everywhere discharge you when you are stable, not when you are well. The weeks between those two states — after surgery, after an illness, after a stroke — are convalescence, and most Western healthcare systems quietly hand that whole phase back to you and your family. Chiang Mai is a genuinely good place to spend it: physiotherapy is affordable and unhurried, short-stay care exists, housing is quiet and cheap by Western standards, and the hospital you came from stays ten minutes away.

Not medical advice — Defiant is a concierge, not a clinic. Your surgeon's discharge plan leads; we build the logistics around it.

The words to know

What we have not read yet

This page is built from Defiant's own directory (OpenStreetMap-derived) and the site's existing guides. The first-hand, sourced reads still pending — the same treatment the diabetes page got — are: McKean Rehabilitation Center's own service pages; Suan Prung Rehabilitation Center's own statements; and which of the 11 mapped geriatric facilities state short-stay convalescent care on their own pages, with prices. Until each is read, this page names them without putting words in their mouths.

FAQ

Can I fly home right after surgery instead?

Ask your surgeon, not us — fitness to fly is a medical call that depends on the procedure. What we can say is that many procedures come with a no-fly window, and Chiang Mai is an inexpensive, pleasant place to sit one out with daily physio instead of a hotel ceiling.

Is there such a thing as a convalescent home in Chiang Mai?

The concept exists — สถานพักฟื้น (sathan phak fuen) is the Thai term — and several care homes take short recuperation stays alongside long-term residents. Which specific facilities state it, and at what price, is checked per case at intake rather than published unverified here.

Who coordinates my recovery plan?

Your surgeon's protocol leads. Defiant books the physio course, the housing, the interpreter, and the follow-up appointments around it, and hands your records to a provider back home when you leave — the same arc described on the physiotherapy page.
