Your VA benefits work in Thailand
Veterans: the VA will pay for care you get in Thailand. Most vets over here don't know that, or tried once, got buried in paperwork, and gave up. It's real, it's called the Foreign Medical Program (FMP), and the whole game is knowing the two rules and picking the right hospital.

The two rules that trip everyone up
1. Service-connected only. FMP reimburses care for the conditions the VA has rated as service-connected — plus any condition that aggravates one. That knee the VA rated at 30%? Covered. The flu you caught last week? Not. This is the #1 misunderstanding, and it's the whole boundary of the program. 2. You must be registered before it pays. FMP isn't automatic with your disability rating — you enroll, and the VA sends you a benefits authorization letter listing exactly which conditions they'll cover abroad. That letter is your golden ticket; bring it to every appointment.

How it actually pays
Thailand is reimbursement-based — there's no VA clinic here (the Philippines is the one exception in the region, with a VA outpatient clinic in Manila). So the model is:
- You get treated for a covered condition, pay or arrange billing, and a claim
- The VA reimburses — these days by direct deposit — for covered services,
- Inference — a hospital experienced with FMP will hand you an **itemized bill

Where to go in Chiang Mai: Rajavej
Operator knowledge (verify for your case) — in our experience the standout for FMP in Chiang Mai is Rajavej Hospital (โรงพยาบาลราชเวช). They handle the Foreign Medical Program paperwork better than anyone we've dealt with here — English itemized billing, records that survive a VA claim, and staff who've done it before. For a veteran, "the hospital already knows FMP" is worth more than a marble lobby.
