Massage in Chiang Mai: 294 Shops, Sorted by a Local

Chiang Mai is the massage capital of a massage country. The old city alone holds more registered shops than most Western cities hold in total, the northern school of Thai massage has its own lineage, and an hour of skilled work costs less than a cinema ticket back home. The problem was never finding a massage — it's knowing which of the five kinds you're about to get, what the fair posted rate is, and how to ask for softer without a phrasebook.

All three, below.

The menu, decoded

First-use Thai, with rough romanization — say it slowly and any shop will smile and take it from there:

On the signSay itWhat happens
นวดแผนไทยnûat phǎen thaiTraditional Thai massage: clothed (loose pajamas provided), no oil — pressing, rocking, and assisted stretches along the body's energy lines
นวดเท้าnûat tháoFoot massage: an armchair, an hour, cream, and the walking day you deserved
นวดน้ำมันnûat nám-manOil massage: table, towels, long strokes — closer to Swedish
นวดประคบnûat prà-khópHot herbal compress: steamed bundles (ลูกประคบ, lûuk prà-khóp) of ginger, turmeric, and lemongrass pressed along the muscles
นวดจับเส้นnûat jàp sên"Holding the lines" — old-school deep work along tendons and nerve lines; the strong stuff, ask for it by name

The North also keeps ย่ำขาง (yâm khǎang) — a Lanna healing practice where the therapist works with a heated plough blade and oiled foot. You'll find it at traditional healing houses rather than storefront shops; it's a cultural experience as much as a treatment, and worth seeking out sober-minded and curious.

What it costs

Posted rates around town, August 2026 — indicative, and the sign wins. A storefront Thai massage runs ฿200–400 per hour; add ฿50–150 for the foot-massage chair hour. Oil work posts ฿300–600 at shops, ฿600–1,200 at proper spas. Hotel and destination spas price ฿800–2,500+ for the same hour with better robes and a gong. Herbal compress adds ฿100–300 anywhere. Tipping ฿50–100 on a shop massage is normal and landed; spas fold service charges in.

Asking whether a price is แพง (phaeng — expensive) is normal Thai small talk, not rudeness. The posted rate is the posted rate; nobody haggles a massage board.

Currency on this page: ฿100 ≈ $3.01 / €2.61 / £2.23 — Bank of Thailand mid rate, 2026-08-14. Live board runs on the household's own feed.

The etiquette nobody writes down

When massage is actually rehab

If you're here around a surgery — orthopedic work especially — there's a real difference between a relaxation massage and clinical soft-tissue work. Post-operative anything belongs with the physical therapists first: the physio page covers session-rate rehab, and the concierge desk sequences surgeon → physio → massage in the right order with the surgeon's sign-off.

FAQ

How much is a one-hour Thai massage in Chiang Mai?

฿200–400 at storefront shops as of August 2026, more at spas. The posted board is the price.

Do I need to book ahead?

Storefronts, almost never — walk in. Destination spas and famous shops, yes, a day or two, especially December–February.

Is Thai massage safe after surgery or with a medical condition?

That's a physician conversation, not a footnote — bring it to your surgeon or doctor first, and start with clinical physio rather than a shop when in doubt.

What's the difference between Thai massage and oil massage?

Thai massage is clothed pressure-and-stretch on a floor mat; oil massage is a table, towels, and long strokes. Different traditions, different afternoons.

Building a recovery trip where the massage is the reward, not the plan? The concierge desk books the medical part for real — quotes in writing before you fly. Questions cost nothing:
